Paul Lucas – Renowned WA Artist
Paul Lucas, a celebrated Western Australian artist, is renowned for his stunning originals, custom-designed commissions, and large canvas prints that beautifully capture the essence of the Abrolhos Islands, Rottnest Island, and other iconic WA coastal landscapes. Born in Derbyshire, England, in 1955, Lucas immigrated to Australia with his family in 1963, where he became enchanted by the striking beauty of the Australian environment.
Influenced by the Romantic Movement and legendary artists such as Turner and Constable, Lucas has developed a distinctive style that breathes life into local landmarks. His rich, dramatic interpretations and ability to infuse everyday scenes with emotion and grandeur have earned him both a dedicated following and numerous accolades.
The ocean is Lucas’ current muse, particularly the mesmerising waters surrounding the Abrolhos Islands. His connection to this subject stems from his years working on Cray boats, which fostered a deep respect and love for the sea. More recently, his passion has expanded to include the breathtaking beauty of Rottnest Island, a haven with 63 beaches and 20 bays, ideal for snorkelers, surfers, and those seeking serenity. Lucas’ artworks masterfully convey the ocean’s ever-changing moods—whether tranquil or tempestuous—using intricate detail and a captivating interplay of light and colour. Each piece transforms utilitarian imagery into sublime art, celebrating the raw beauty and power of the marine environment.
Lucas has also extended his artistic focus inland, turning his attention to Perth’s lakes and waterways. Through his lens, these urban natural spaces are reimagined as tranquil retreats, capturing the balance between city life and the natural world.
Lucas’ works have been exhibited internationally, and his art continues to draw admirers from around the globe. Today, his pieces are available for purchase directly through his website, at his Perth International Airport Art Gallery, Subiaco Restoration, or via private appointments at his South Perth home studio. These exclusive viewings offer clients a unique opportunity to experience his art up close and gain insight into his creative process.
Blending realism and romanticism, Paul Lucas creates art that not only depicts Western Australia’s landscapes but also evokes the emotions and wonder these scenes inspire. His works are cherished additions to homes, corporate buildings, and collections worldwide, serving as enduring tributes to the stunning beauty of WA’s coastal and natural environments.

Paul has not always painted the beautiful blues and greens of the Abrolhos Islands. His journey as an artist began using a very different pallet - the many rich green and golds of the Australian landscape. From the tall timber forests of the Southwest to the intense reds and browns of the Pilbara and the Central West. Loving the art of creating illusion on canvas, Paul recently created a series of canvases simulating various walls. From rendered, to brickwork, to wallpaper and old cracked plaster. Each work depicts antique objects hanging off these walls. Wanting to take this illusionary concept a step further, Paul proceeded to paint picture frames around the edge of each canvas whereby adding to the realism.
Paul is constantly seeking out new challenges he can pursue on his journey as an artist and is currently inviting commissions. If you are interested in a custom-made piece, please get in touch.

The 'Batavia Aground' trilogy depicts the time line of events leading up to and including that tragic day at the Abrolhos Islands in 1629. The ‘First Light’ kicks off the trilogy with the ship shown at sunrise and them realising their grave situation.
The three works have been sold to private collectors and we now offer ‘Limited Edition’ canvas prints of the original series so all can still own your piece of Western Australian history.
